True Cost of Black Friday November 29 2013, 3 Comments
Can you believe it Americans have been duped out of celebrating Thanksgiving Day in part by big box retailers who have lured them in to supposedly save a few bucks? Think about all the poor employees who were forced to work starting yesterday morning before daylight and did not get to have a decent breakfast with their family on a day that has traditionally been about giving thanks with loved ones. Instead they shared the day with shopping fanatics who put the turkey in the oven and then headed out the door to get the Pre- Black Friday Blockbuster Deals.
Consumers please wake up. The really supposedly incredible deals you will encounter on any advertising associated with the words Black Friday are not deals at all when you consider the true cost. The big box retailer employees paid an incredible amount by having to work all day to bring you the deals without fitting compensation. You better believe the big boys who came up with these dirty Black Friday strategies are off enjoying the holiday with their loved ones in their cozy chateaus. Please add in the poor workers in China who supplied the labor to produce the Blockbuster Deals and survive on mere pennies. Equally as devastating is the plight of those American workers who have no jobs because their manufacturing job was taken to China so the big-box retailer can get a way with highway robbery on labor cost. We must also consider the lost of the unique and caring mom and pop shops that have been annihilated by big box retailers whose customer service creed is best summed on as “we do not give a flip, we just want the numbers to make our stockholders happy.” Finally, consumers should consider their cost when they buy poor quality items that need to be replaced over and over again. When you add all the true cost up, Black Friday is a losing proposition.
Those of us not duped by Black Friday will instead choose to do our holiday shopping locally at the remnant of mom and pop small businesses still among us, buy products produced from companies that demonstrate care for their employees and buy from artisans online (please consider our company @ www.rhsignature.com offering curated Beautiful Artisan Goods) and in brick and mortar stores producing unique items that are made to last.

(1) AS A SHOPPER, ARE YOU TIRED OF GIMMICKY SALES?
(2) AS A SHOPPER, ARE YOU TIRED OF PAYING FOR POOR QUALITY THINGS?
If you answered YES to both of these questions, then our company has been formed with you, the “enlightened and discerning shopper” in mind.
As the founder of RH Signature Company and an “enlightened and discerning shopper” myself, who has not stepped foot in a traditional shopping mall in several years, I am really proud of bringing to you goods from companies I personally seek out as a shopper. I make it a point to find businesses that are (1) supporting companies that are offering authentic goods and thus preserving art forms, (2) are using processes that have withstood the test of time to ensure quality, and (3) that are helping to continue the vitality of their local communities.
It is our vision to create a company that only curates a collection of high quality goods so you will have to buy less stuff. When you do buy something new from us, consider it as an investment piece that you can use to enrich your every day life. We like to think of the items we are bringing to you as EVERYDAY LUXURIES.
As far as the pricing, all of our items have been priced at cost to us plus at max 100% to cover our expenses. One expense that we really are keen on upsetting is the retail industry’s conventional thinking on is labor cost. As we grow, I am determined to make sure all of our team members are paid a living wage at minimum and even better I aspire to set up a model where we pay every single member of our team enough to ensure a good quality of life – whatever they decide that looks like for them. While I know I won't be able to do this overnight, I think it is important to articulate that we are NOT setting out to become another run of the mill company looking to lure you in with gimmicky sales tactics, then get you to buy a poor quality item marked up 200%- 300%, who then turns around and pays its employees as little as they can get away with and keeps all the profits at the top without any trickling down to their community or employees. Our ultimate goal is to upset this flawed conventional retail industry model by winning one “enlightened and discerning shopper” at a time.
Will you join us on our journey?

Inspiring Iconic Quotes: Featured Artist Lisa Ekstrom, Part II October 07 2013, 0 Comments
The focus of this series is iconic quotes that INSPIRE and exemplify experience and wisdom. The quote "Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance" by Coco Chanel captures the daring elegance that she personified throughout her trailblazing career in fashion and consequent enhancement of the status and images of women.
Having the words "Perseverance is my motto" come from Madame C.J. Walker is very inspiring. Madame C.J. Walker was orphaned at the age of seven and self-taught but went on to become the first female self-made millionaire in America. Along the way of making her fortune in the hair care industry, she made it her mission to empower numerous other women entrepreneurs. She used her wealth to advance worthy philanthropic causes of her time.
The words "All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them" spoken by Walt Disney are very motivating when you consider that he started out with just sketches of a mouse and created a multifaceted entertainment empire that continue s to fascinate diverse audiences today.
Once we had our inaugural ten quotes we again handed them over to Lisa and asked her to make them beautiful using hues that complimented the words. To capture the unique spark of each quote, Lisa ingeniously used "the expressiveness of hand-lettering with a brush." We paired Lisa's astonishing work with the sophistication of top quality gold frames made in Gainesboro, Tennessee by Neilsen Bainbridge.
We hope you find these quotes as beautiful and inspiring as we do!
Featured Artist Lisa Ekstrom, Part I: Facets of Fall October 07 2013, 1 Comment
Artist Lisa Ekstrom studied Fine Art at the Maryland Institute College of Art. She currently lives and works in Berkeley, California. Raised in a family of architects, painters, musicians, and weavers, she was the only second grader who could explain "Helvetica" which is a widely used sans-serif typeface developed in 1957 by Swiss typeface designer Max Miedinger.
After years of working as an art director and graphic designer, Lisa began to focus more on her handlettering, painting and illustration. These days Lisa can be found ink-spattered, paintbrush at the ready, singing along with her accordion, and nearly always in red clogs.
We are ecstatic to unveil our "Facets of Fall" collaboration with Lisa. We came to Lisa with the specific images we wanted to capture through watercolor painting and simply asked her to make these aspects of Fall beautiful. Arguably, after all, fall is the most beautiful season of the year but is often short changed because our attention so quickly turns to the grandeur of the pending Holiday Season. Further, fall is often narrowly interpreted with strong and overbearing brown and bright orange hues.
We really wanted to capture the softer side of fall and Lisa has done this oh so well. As she explains:
"For these fall-flavored designs, I was inspired by the colors, scents, and textures of Fall. I made watercolor portraits of three different facets of the season: the crisp sunny pears, the rich sensual hues of the figs, and the fall floral with its delicate, glowing palette."
For this softer side of fall, we are thankful!
